Project summary

Access 4U was appointed by Davlyn Construction Limited, a longstanding customer, to deliver the scaffolding package for The Promenade at Mercia Marina in Willington, Derbyshire. The Promenade is a mixed-use development of waterside apartments with new retail and restaurant space.

The package combined a full-perimeter independent scaffold with roof edge protection, three designed Layher loading bays and two step-access stair towers. After handover, Access 4U stayed on site to adapt the scaffold as the build progressed.

The access challenge

On a development of this kind, perimeter access is only part of what the scaffold has to do. The structure needed to carry trades around the building, get materials up to working levels and protect work at roof height, all at the same time and all without holding up the construction programme.

Material handling shaped much of the design. Rather than relying on ad hoc loading points, the package needed dedicated bays that could take materials to the working levels where they were needed. Movement between levels was the other priority. With trades working across several lifts, ladder access alone would have slowed the build.

The scaffold also had to keep up with a changing programme. As different trades and work areas moved through the project, the access requirements changed with them.

Access 4 U’s approach

Access 4U erected a full-perimeter independent scaffold around the development and built the loading, stair access and edge protection requirements into a single package.

Three designed Layher loading bays gave the site team dedicated points for transferring materials to working levels. Two step-access stair towers gave operatives a safe route between levels without depending on ladders. Roof edge protection was installed to protect work around the upper sections of the building.

After the initial handover, Access 4U remained on site, carrying out adaptations requested by the Davlyn Construction site team as the build progressed.

Outcome

Access 4U handed over a complete scaffold package covering perimeter access, roof edge protection, material loading and stair access, then adapted it around Davlyn Construction’s programme as the build moved forward.
