Access 4U was appointed as the commercial scaffolding contractor for media equipment installation works at Bramall Lane, home of Sheffield United FC, ahead of the new season. 

The project required 24-hour mobilisation and out-of-hours working throughout. Access 4U erected a Layher independent scaffold running the full length of the family stand, designed to current TG20 standards, without any disruption to matchday operations. 

The access challenge 

Bramall Lane is a working football stadium, and that single fact shaped every access decision on site. New media equipment had to be installed at the family stand before the new season started, which meant time was critical from the moment instruction was given. Out-of-hours working was required throughout to avoid conflict with matchday schedules, pre-match preparation, and public movement across the concourses. The client required scaffold on site within 24 hours of instruction. 

The stand's full length determined the scaffold configuration. An independent Layher system was designed to run its entire length, giving contractors a continuous working platform at the height required for the installation. Before mobilisation began, loading requirements, anchor positions, and tie patterns were all assessed and confirmed, because restricted working hours and a live venue left no room for reactive decisions once the programme was underway. 

How Access 4U delivered the project

The stadium stand was surveyed before any scaffold was erected to establish anchor positions, load paths, and an access sequence that kept the programme moving without conflicting with stadium operations. Full RAMS were produced and submitted prior to mobilisation. 

The structure was designed to current TG20 standards and where geometry or loading at the signage positions fell outside standard TG20 limits, a bespoke TG30 engineering design was produced.

A Layher independent scaffold was selected and erected to run the full length of the family stand. Layher's speed of erection was chosen because of the 24-hour mobilisation requirement, the pre-season deadline, and the tight out-of-hours windows available on site. 

All works were carried out outside normal operational periods with every phase of the scaffolding erection, use, and management of the scaffold took place out of hours to protect the programme and keep the pre-season deadline on track. Stadium access, seating areas, and concourses remained unaffected throughout. 

Mandatory 7-day scaffold inspections were carried out by CITB/CISRS-trained inspectors throughout the contract, with the ability to carry out those inspections by either basic or advanced inspectors. Inspection records were maintained and available to the principal contractor at all times. All operatives hold valid CSCS cards. 

Outcome 

Zero operational disruption across the contract period. The phased delivery approach meant stadium operations continued without enforced shutdowns.
